Mr. MQM Leaders, both in and outside the country with their British Passport.. if you may please answer the following Questions?!

Dear Mr. MQM Leaders, both in and outside the country with their British Passport,

My Salutations to you, which are to be followed with a lot of questions, which I hope that you would be able to find time to answer among all the bloody target killing politics that you have to deal with.

I hope that you would not take any hard feelings towards these and would treat them as nothing more, but the thinking of an idle mind who was stuck at home for 4 days because of the things in the city caused by your rift with ANP noble plans to rid the city of the terrorist that live in a certain hill in the city! Therefore my first question to you follows the very reasonable question regarding your cause.

  1. Why have you taken upon yourself to rid the city of these terrorist that live in a certain city?
  2. Why are you so whiny demanding to the extent of being stubborn, like a 16 year old dumb chick?
  3. What makes you so special that you think that only, as per your words, you deserve the urban centers of Sindh deserve the Local Government Ordinance? Continue reading

Karachi under siege?

“Is there a foreign hand involved in these attacks?”

“Can this possibly be an American attack?”

“Is Israel or RAW involved in it?”

“Why did they rush the Chinese out of the base?”

“Is this related to Baluchistan or the fact that the Gwader Port was only handed yesterday to the Chinese?”

Are we Screwed yet?The scenario for Pakistan Post-Osama!

It’s been a lot over 12 days now since the death of the most wanted man in the world! I know that the world and blogosphere simply went nuts after his death, but I wanted to wait for a while before I can say anything on it. The reason for this was simply that I wanted the dust of conspiracies to settle down!

However, this settling of the dust should in no way be confused with the truth being out or something. This is simply due to the realization, that whether it was the real Osama or not, it only means one thing for Pakistan, which is

Retelling the tale of my Friend!

A friend of mine retold an interesting set of events that happened to him just the other day. I have decided – and let him know – that I would be retelling this story. Therefore people, here is what happened to him the other day.

Yesterday that is on 7th April 2011, my friend was taking pictures of a park near his house, which is in the area of Garden. His bike was parked outside, and this photography session was in line with his thesis topic.

As per the current trend, the park has been hijacked by a certain political party – let’s just call them the Sathi group – and within seconds, they were behind my friend, and had pinned a gun to this back, and their main concern was simply, “to which party did he belong to”.

From there he was taken to the Union Council of that area that apparently falls under 167 or something – and taken in a room, which was lined with weapons. My friend was able to get out of this mess by using his cunningness, and the contacts and help of some friends. Still they refused to return his memory card, even after they broke it, reason being that they wanted to make sure that he didn’t take any wrong pictures. Continue reading

Another attack on a sane voice!

Things are shaping out to be exactly like they had been predicted. All the sane voices in the country now are being threatened to be silenced forever, or to take a different stance!

News is coming in that the Minority Minister has been attacked. His opinions have been a very small silver lining that has been coming out of the Margalla Hills where the government has decided to speak as little as possible so as not to ignite the religious bloc, that – as it is becoming more and more apparent since the death of Salman Taseer – comprises of more than half of this countries population!

This is not the end of it! Sherry Rahman who presented the bill for the repealing of the bill have been scared into a corner, while the article today byAbbas Ather shows the courage of a man despite all that is surrounding him! It is now in these bits of courage and protest that all of us can find encouragement for our own scared souls!

A friend of mine recently exclaimed to me that how they talk all the time that Pakistan is going to the dogs! He lives in London, so he can give this statement without ever worrying of what impact it can have for all of us sitting out here, living within this country!

I guess we need to make ourselves contend with whatever we can get!

This country was not made for minorities!

Since the moment I turned on my tv, I have been hearing comments and statements from my mother – and after coming home from my father – about how evil (I can’t find any other word) the attacks targeted at the Ahmadi’s were. And I can’t help but agree with them and feel sad about where we are heading towards as a nation. This incident is just one more nail in the coffin that will be of Pakistan.

Almost as soon as the incident happen, analyst and reporters flooded the tv screens with their own analysis about who could be behind it. Beside the fact that the responsibility had already been taken by a random fundamental wing called the Punjab Taliban (PTI), but still the old hearsay could still be heard on the airways about how there is the involvement of a foreign head in it and how they are trying to destabilize the country.. I just don’t understand.. why don’t they finally get it that this country doesn’t need a foreign hand to destabilize it.. It is doing a pretty good job on its own.

As I write this post, it is 11 pm.. it has been almost 8 hours or so since the attack on this minority group took place, and I cant stop but feeling helpless, because I feel that despite all our awareness and big talks, we don’t do anything.. how many of us can i hope to see tomorrow on the streets to protest against what has happened? I hope the answer is better than I am thinking!I remembered a joke that someone had made about Ahmadi’s that they were the most religious lot she had seen, always fasting and praying and this makes them even more boring… she used to say “If this is their condition when they are not considered Muslims, consider what they would have been like if they weren’t constitutionally banned?”

The Old Fimiliar Blame Game!

It is always the same old story.. and things always take the same turn always..

Mustafa Kamal

no know knows why this pattern has established… no one wants to think about how we can change it… and nobody is intrigued by it anymore.

After the bomb blast on the Moharram procession, the usual game began, with everyone asking that who is to be blamed. The independent media ofcourse (over)played it’s part. Continue reading

The Moharram Tragedy

At 4:20 pm today there was a bomb blast in the city as the Main Ashura procession was passing at M.A.Jinnah Road. Till now almost 20 people, and around 50 people have been injured.

Till yesterday under this very heading I was going to write with a different perspective, that can be summed up as below.

It has always been astonishing to me that people usually don’t care about having their voice heard. They don’t come out when the country is going through a crisis, like when the democratic government was toppled by a military General who would live up to the term “dictator”.

But every year people would come on to the streets every Moharram and perform their religious acts with such dedications- sometimes crossing over to the point of barbarity. This was explained to me by my friends in more or less these words

This is an act of piety, we mourn the death of our Imam and his followers who lost their lives fighting the evil that was Yazid. This procession every year is a sort of symbolic act which is meant to say that we are here against any Yazid that would rise today. We mean to show that we have power in our numbers, and every year you can see the wave of men and women who come out to warn anyone who would dare strike the innocent.

Now I am all for religious independence and I have many friends who are Shia and I respect their believes tremendously. But I think most of the people have engaged themselves too much literally to the concept.. Shouldn’t the point be to rise and come out in the streets against the wrong? And not just in Moharram? Where are all these people year long when so much wrong is going on in the world which is wrong?

The symbolism of the Ashura Procession

I dont mean to sound Prejudce and therefore I should say that it is not only the tragedy of one sect but of all of us. We all take religion literally, when I hardly think that it is the reasonable approach because most of the religion is not literal . There is symbolism and meaning between the lines.

Today, after hearing the news of the blast, I am going to change my perspective a bit, and say the following, that it is certainly very courageous for people to go out year after year knowing the possibility that is out there, knowing that each year after year there is a chance that there is going to a blast. Even as I type this, there are people who are out there on the streets who are continuing with the Moharram Procession. Continue reading

Another blast rips the country

Every blast sends new waves of fears through out the country, and makes you reassess the entire political system of this country. Yesterdays blast at the Mosque at Parade lane in Rawalpindi were thus not an exception to this fact.. or at least that is true for me.

The day before yesterday, after many heated arguments I decided to change my stance towards the army. I thought that I would from today onwards limit my hatred towards the Generals and the majors only, and not towards the many soldiers that have lost their lives, either fighting in Swat or Waziristan, or for that matter even during performing their duties at the many residential quaters that they have so lovingly built for themselves and their families with our tax money. After all not everyone in the army is the like of  Zia’s and Ayub’s and Yahya’s and the Musharraf’s. I thought I would change my perspective, but then the blast happened yesterday and did it make my blood boil.

First, it boiled when I heard the news about the blast, then it boiled when I saw the nightly agonizing show of Kamran Khan.. a paid ISI man. He and to be fair, many of the other anchors on many of the other shows clearly highlighted the fact that the bombing of this mosque marks the darkest day in the Pakistani history.

Attack on the Islamic University

Not before has any tragedy hit home to me as much as the bombing on the Islamic University. You can call me an insensitive person who has no compassion for other people’s pain. But its not that.

You see, whenever the bombing used to take place in the many girls school in Swat, I used to dismiss it as a war-zone. Of course we said that it was barbaric, and that those people should be executed and all those words of hate and anger.

A Girls School in Swat bombed off

A Girls' School in Swat bombed off

Every time it happened in Peshawar, I again dismissed it by saying well it always happened there. NO big deal. The images on the tube managed to intice me for a minute until finally something more shiny comes along.

I was there when the blast took place on the 18th of October. The bomb went off in front of me. Although the impact lasted for almost 4 days but  the fact of the matter was that it wasn’t unexpected. The loss of lives was immense, the effect on me even greater. How could that happen? How can anyone do that?

The attacks on the Islamic University for the first time scared me.. I have been scared since that day that it can happen here.. in my university. It can happen when I am taking my classes, it can happen when I am not in the university, but my friends are. They aren’t playing by the rules.. for them everything goes and we are a weak piece of humanity that has the power to do nothing.. our words, our tax money, our army, our prayers all of it is useless. Nothing can change the situation. Continue reading

Lahore Attacks

LAHORE IS ONCE MORE UNDER ATTACK, AS MULTIPLE ATTACKS TOOK PLACE IN THE CITY IN THE EARLY HOURS, LEAVING 20 DEAD. THE PLANNED ATTACKS TARGETED THE SECURITY ZONES OF THE CITY, PUTTING SERIOUS QUESTIONS ON OUR INTELLIGENCE ABILITY

I am so furious right now.. and I am shocked right now. This is the country that can always be found bragging about how it can take over USA and India and Israel any day. And yet the situation in reality is that within a week, a certain pattern of attacks has continued, bringing the tally up to a 5.

3 attacks have taken place in Lahore, 2 in places that have already been attacked before, and despite warnings circulating of attacks in the Capital and in Punjab, the security preparations were less than perfect. Todays attack were targeted at the

  • ELITE POLICE ACADEMY, BEDIAN

Almost 7 people have been reported injured so far, and the search is still on for any more suspected terrorist that might be in the building still.

Lahore Attacks

  • THE FIA BUILDING,

The building has been cleared and the injured have been shifted to the hospitals. A suicide jacket was also found from the vicinity. The last time the FIA building was rocked from its very foundations (literally) was last year on 11th March when almost 26 people and injuring almost 176 people.

  • MANAWAN POLICE ACADEMY, MANAWAN

At the Manawan Training School, grenades were fired, as a number of terrorist entered the building and started firing, while 2 suicide bombers blew themselves up. News is that the building is clear of terrorist. But then should the agencies be believd?

The recent attacks on GHQ tell us that the attacks on security agencies is being underplayed in the media. And there  is no certainty, in my mind at least, that there wont be news of the fighting continuing and the security officials being surrounded by the terrorist as hostages.

I am so furious right now, where the hell was our ****** **  intelligence? Where was the security? Where is 50%  of our budget that is used by these agencies going? What is it being used for?

The consequences of the War Technology

In my philosophy course, there was once a discussion about how the recent developments in the War technologies has made war more easy and horrendous.. not only from a technology point of view but also from a Psychological point of view.My teacher argued that now since we don’t get to see the impact of our action, the impact of killing a person is dramatically less than it might have been, lets say in the Crusades.

Last night during watching Vantage point there was a scene when the terrorist Mastermind is able to shoot at the President, make a bomb go away all while simply sitting somewhere and it makes one realize that war and attacks simply have become too easy now to make happen. They don’t require a guilt factor and they don’t make you suffer over killing someone since you are so far away that you are able to disassociate yourself with the reality of the ground.

The argument against this can always be that the media is now there to provide us with the visual link to what is happening far away and that we can see the impact literally unfolding before our eyes. That is true. It was much clear during the recent Palestine Conflict and it was therefore that there was such a huge support for the Palestine Cause and such a pressure to stop the attacks and they did work in making the conflict stop.

Btu then it is also the choice of the media what it chooses to show or not. Such a case in point is the drone attacks that have been happening in the North of our country, Pakistan for almost an year now. The drone attacks have killed more innocent people then thy have the terrorist and thus now brewing the new threat of a new wave of terrorist as a reaction to this.

The media however has not given much attention to this and thus although the headlines with a Google map showing the area of attack is visible to us but not the actual scene of the disaster is ever transmitted to us. Maybe that is why the cause “STOP THE DRONE ATTACKS” hasn’t been able to catch much dynamics. Continue reading
