Maid and Us – an evolving relationship!

Never before did i think that it is possible to have a maid as a status symbol! But apparently it is!

We have never been the family that stresses too much about the maid and keep looking and following it stressing till the last spot of dust has been removed; we have never been the family that keeps firing one maid after the other until they find the one that fulfills treats their own house like their first born!

This is how it has worked for us. The maid comes in on the first day; she is taken through the duties that she is suppose to do! Her time is usually fixed according to our whims, which is usually at 9, when we are all fast asleep and she does her work without getting in our faces and leaves… anything that needs to be complained about her lack of care for our house is transmitted to her the next morning!

We had the same maid for over 10 years and when she left, it was like we had been completely abandoned… we were lost for so long, we didn’t trust anyone else to take care of our house for a  long time, there were a few rebounds but they just didn’t work! Continue reading

Another attack on a sane voice!

Things are shaping out to be exactly like they had been predicted. All the sane voices in the country now are being threatened to be silenced forever, or to take a different stance!

News is coming in that the Minority Minister has been attacked. His opinions have been a very small silver lining that has been coming out of the Margalla Hills where the government has decided to speak as little as possible so as not to ignite the religious bloc, that – as it is becoming more and more apparent since the death of Salman Taseer – comprises of more than half of this countries population!

This is not the end of it! Sherry Rahman who presented the bill for the repealing of the bill have been scared into a corner, while the article today byAbbas Ather shows the courage of a man despite all that is surrounding him! It is now in these bits of courage and protest that all of us can find encouragement for our own scared souls!

A friend of mine recently exclaimed to me that how they talk all the time that Pakistan is going to the dogs! He lives in London, so he can give this statement without ever worrying of what impact it can have for all of us sitting out here, living within this country!

I guess we need to make ourselves contend with whatever we can get!

Shaheed Salman Taseer!

I always hated this compulsion of ours as a nation to define anyone who might have died even in the most ridiculous of circumstances – a nazim dead, a person coming under the wheel of a bus, Target killing – as Shaheed! It was just one more label, but I guess it really comes home when a person who truly deserved this label is being banished from all directions in to an “infidel” who is simply not worth this honor. Isn’t it ironic that he was the son of a man who led the funeral of Il’m-ud-din!

Half an hour into the news being cast on the news to the weary hours of the morning when I finally turned the TV off, he had been converted from a politician of the stature of Indira Gandhi to another statistics that would be compiled at the end of the year to show the loss that we as a nation have suffered!

Every show that aired itself with Salman Taseer as the main topic whose its words wisely, every speaker on these show chose their words wisely. They all started with “Yes it has been a great loss on a humanitarian level…. but….”! Groups have been made up to honour the death of Salman Taseer, the cyber space was filled with voices from both rejoice and frustration, and among all this, was the fear that this would only act as encouragement, and from now on we need to be more careful!
